This interdisciplinary math lesson from Illuminations may be used in conjunction with geography education. Students will consider strategies for figuring out the distance to the horizon from various heights. A formula will be generated that may be used to determine this distance. The example of the height of Mount Everest is also used. This lesson is appropriate for grades 9-12 and should require 1 class period to complete.
