This online companion to a new exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ernest Hemingway, arguably the "single most influential American writer of the twentieth century." This exhibition includes photographs, paintings, letters, first editions, manuscripts, and personal memorabilia related to Hemingway's adventurous and successful literary career. The comprehensive exhibition also contains material about Hemingway's literary contemporaries, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein, and Ezra Pound.
