A quick write is a 3-5 minute activity that releases creativity in the students and generates ideas for writing class. Students are given a prompt and asked to write silently for 3-5 minutes about anything that comes to mind in their writer's notebook. During the personal narrative unit students can enter the room and immediately write for 3-5 solid minutes as bell work. The teacher can offer a sharing time or wait until the end of class. I find in the first weeks of school students enjoy sharing. I allow some sharing immediately after the quick write session. They enjoy it so much it is later a class reward. I will hold this off until the end of class and offer it as a reward to the class for a hardworking day. This resource is part of the Personal Narrative collection.
