This exercise uses a graphing calculator to investigate the relation between the vertex form and the standard form for the equation of a parabola. In this context it is an exemplary lesson. Students use the calculator to bypass the intricacies of graphing quadratic functions. This is standard practice now, but what has been lost in the use of calculators is any "number sense" the students might have acquired in doing these tasks manually.
