Students will work in teams of four to write a collaborative story. Each student will choose a photo or visual image for their story prompt and begin to write their own story based upon this photo. Then, students will switch computers to add to a teammate’s story. Students will continue to rotate computers until the story is completed, contributing to every teammate’s story at once. Students will finish their own stories and add additional digital images once the story is completed. This resource is part of the English Language Arts collection.

Cool lesson. It integrated technology in a creative way and really enhanced student learning. It would have been better if there was a specific goal that the lesson was attaining. Some procedures such as "peer editing" could have used some more explanation, but overall most of the steps were clear and understandable.
I like this lesson. It seems like a fun and creative way for students to collaborate together to create a story from an image. I noticed a grade level wasn't mentioned and although she provides links regarding image processing, I feel like she should have made time to show the class how to process the image into their project.
I thought this lesson plan was a great way for students to practice their creativity, imagination, and writing skills. I also liked that they got to share with their classmates and work in teams. My only critique would be to make sure to put time constraints on each step. Some students could write alot while some students may only write for a minute.
I thought this was a very creative and beneficial lesson, but I thought the explanations were a bit wordy and confusing. I think extra steps would need to be taken when using this lesson with younger students.
Overall, lesson was good but a bit lengthy. The lesson plan easily could have been a little bit easier to navigate as well as understand. The concept of the lesson is interesting and appealing to students, however there is no specific age range specified for this lesson. I think it's great that the lesson gives the students the opportunity to be creative on their own, and there is no specific strict guidelines for how the story should turn out. Great job!
This lesson is creative and well thought out. One thing I would suggest is providing a list of acceptable images to use for the assignment. Students might chose unacceptable photos for this assignment. Also keep in mind not all students write at the same rate, so not all products will be the same quality. As a teacher you might want to grade the projects by the beginning and end. How well was the student able to bring the story together at the end? Great lesson though.
I thought that this lesson was very good. The lesson plan was interesting and engaging, and makes good use of technology and group work skills. It might easier to follow if the information was reorganized so that all procedures were together, however. Also, a suggested age group and a standard or learning goal to which this can be linked are needed. The rubric is good, but it would be beneficial to include information on how each student will be graded: individually, as a group, or a combination of both. Finally, more instructions on peer editing would be nice.
This is a solid lesson. I like that it utilizes different technological avenues that enhances the lesson. My issue is the use of time. I am not convinced that it needs to last 2-3 class periods. With structured time limits students should be able to complete the activities sooner. Also, this helps in classroom management in that students wont waste time as they tend to do in group work.
Overall, I found this lesson to be engaging and a great way for students to not only practice writing skills but also communication skills with those that they are working with in their group. As with the previous comments, I did not find a grade level that this would be paired with.
I liked the level of student engagement, and how it was a student product oriented lesson. After looking at the pertinent age groups under the "Information" tab, I wondered how much accommodation would be granted for the various grade levels, particularly the Grades 3-5. Since this involves some in-depth computer use for elementary students (relevant image searching, web page creation and publishing), the lesson should allot some time for helping students with problems they will inevitably confront.
Interesting and creative lesson plan, but like the commenters before me I could not find the specified age group or standard that was being used. I thought, though, that it was creative to use a picture and have all teams complete a story. It was very creative and provides a cohesiveness to the class as a whole, I feel.
Overall, this seems like a really interesting and engaging lesson. I was a little confused by the procedure at first, though, because much of the lesson plan involves computer use, but the "Explain" section seems to involve verbal storytelling. Otherwise, my only other concern was how the computer/writing portion will affect any students with LD or similar difficulties.
I really enjoyed reading this lesson plan and I felt that it could be adapted to be used with any age group. I think that it is a really creative way to get students into creative writing, since they have no idea how the story will end up! I had a little bit of trouble following the flow of the lesson plan, but overall I thought it would be a great lesson.
I think this is a strong idea for a lesson. This group writing activity will be an enjoyable way for students to practice word processing and creative writing skills. The lesson plan could have included a more step-by-step procedure area, as the storytelling and story writing activities were extremely similar and could have confused an outsider reading the lesson plan. I think the grading rubric would have to be altered for this activity. A lot of the grading was based off of overall tone and central idea of the story, however, with so many different students collaborating on a work, a solid central tone and idea might be difficult to achieve. Overall, I really liked this lesson plan idea and I believe the students will as well.
I think the lesson is a creative tool to spark student's excitement regarding writing.
It was very thorough and detailed, however, it could be somewhat simplified. I think there need to be a more solid objective or "I can statement" to better target the meaning of this lesson. I also do not believe this lesson should take 2-3 days, it can be done in much less time.
Overall, it successfully relays creative and useful techniques in brainstorming and writing.
I found this to be a very engaging lesson plan that the students would enjoy. It would definitely take up a lot of class time, but I do think that it would be great practice for the students to work in groups. I am not sure how to relate it to a topic in the classroom, but I could see it being used in language arts classroom.
This lesson did a really good job of incorporating the students different ideas into one cohesive lesson. It allows students to express their point of view while also looking at their peers ideas and writing styles. I think that the teacher should address what it is that the students will get out of this lesson and what they should take away from the activity.
I really liked the creativity in this lesson! It was a little confusing to distinguish whether the group of four was using the same photo or individual photos until the "Elaborate" section at the very end of the lesson plan-- possibly something that would help with this is to have all of the directions, procedures, and explanations in one section so that there is no repetition or uncertainty. I thought that it would also be more interesting for each student in the group of four to pick their own individual photo and go from there. I think it would be difficult for a group of four to agree upon one photo to write about.
This lesson plan is very creative and I think it would generate a lot of interest from students to really participate and engage in. The plan was very thorough with the actual procedures and you included several options/resources, allowing teachers to really make the lesson their own.
Also, this plan incorporates effectively integrates technology into a standard writing assignment. Some other considerations you could add to the plan would be to use a wiki or a google doc instead of Microsoft Word, since most students are familiar with Microsoft programs already. Great lesson plan!
I liked the idea of the lesson and thought it was a fun way for the kids to create a story. However, the age of the lesson confused me; I thought it may have been for older elementary children, but the story starters seemed to be for younger children. Overall, i liked this lesson and thought the children would also enjoy it.
This lesson does a great job of modeling and scaffolding brainstorming techniques for students. I also like how the lesson uses a lot of student creativity and emphases creative thought.
I think the lesson could be updated using google.docs since it would speed up the process significantly. Although difficult to measure, there should be a section for engagement since the stories are "made up."
The last extension activity is a great example of authentic learning. They could even submit one of CNN's iReport as part of the activity.
I thought the lesson was very creative and liked that the students practiced telling a story in groups before writing one. However, I think there may be some chaos in the room with everyone moving seats to new computers and time may be wasted.
I think this lesson was a good idea and it was pretty easy to understand. However, I did think it was a little lengthy. I also had some questions about it like, what is the reason you chose to do this assignment (how does it relate to your class and what does it teach the students) and for what age group is this?
Overall, I thought this was a very cool lesson idea. I thought that allowing students the opportunity to work in groups to come up with a story is an interesting concept and one that didn't seem to be too difficult. My only criticisms are that I didn't know what age group this was meant for and I was unsure of what the other three group members responsibilities were while the one student is writing their part of the story.
I liked the idea of this lesson, but I couldn't find an age range that the lesson is geared toward, and the procedures seem to be spread out throughout the entire lesson plan (putting them all in one category as a list might have made the procedures more clear). Also, a very limited amount of classrooms could do this lesson, because of the particular laptop that is required. It could be done in computer labs however, if they are available in the school.
