It is well established that a protein-conducting channel enables hydrophilic secretory proteins to be translocated across membranes and hydrophobic membrane proteins to be inserted into lipid bilayers. In their Perspective, Dobberstein and Sinning discuss a new structural study (published elsewhere) that reveals the molecular mechanism of protein translocation in bacteria and eukaryotes.
