<p>Sarah Biehl, Policy Director, Children’s Defense Fund- Ohio, on “school pushouts,” school resource officers, and model programs. The larger concept of school pushout, and how a host of policies and practices in schools – including, but not limited to, exclusionary school discipline and zero tolerance policies – plays a role in pushing children out of school and into our juvenile and criminal justice systems. The role that police officers, or school resource officers, play in contributing to the school to prison pipeline, and wt schools can do to minimize that risk (model programs around the country). Examples of things that classroom teachers have done around the country to better manage classrooms and behavior problems without the need to remove children from the classroom as discipline.</p>
