Appropriate for high school students, this resource is the static (non-Flash) version of an animation of human DNA sequencing. The resource combines text and illustrations to give an overview of the many steps involved in a sequencing method called the map-based shotgun approach. As the final page explains, there are other methods for sequencing and variations on the approach shown here. This resource divides the process into five main parts. Students click on links to navigate through the entire procedure. The resource emphasizes that scientists currently cannot sequence an entire chromosome at once. Instead, they deal with overlapping, short lengths of DNA and work backwards to determine the sequence of bases in a given chromosome. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
