Reviewer Comments:

This is a comprehensive Revolutionary War novel unit that integrates Language Arts and Social Studies in a series of 20 lessons. Using historical fiction that represents a range of perspectives and reading levels as the center point, the unit is infused with metacognitive strategies, vocabulary development, authentic assessment, and tools for differentiation. The two primary modes for tapping into metacognition are visualizations and summaries for which rubrics are provided. Included are a vocabulary pre-test, anticipation guides for all 4 novels (My Brother Sam Is Dead, Fighting Ground, Sarah Bishop, and The Riddle of Penncroft Farm), daily reading guides, rubrics, talk show format, and directions for creating a plot poster. Students will benefit from the various opportunities to connect with the text and classmates, as well as the creative outlets to deepen their understanding. Consider having students generate their own vocabulary lists and comprehension questions. Otherwise, an excellent and comprehensive resource for students studying the Revolutionary War through literature.
