Description:

The Strait of Gibraltar, above, was formed by tectonic activity. The Eurasian and African tectonic plates drifted apart, creating a waterway between the Atlantic Ocean (to the west) and the Mediterranean Sea (to the east). The Strait of Gibraltar is still being impacted by tectonic activity. It is closing, as the African plate slides north.
