Description:

Sunshine and Shadows allows students to explore shadows. Students will observe how shadows form, how light effects objects, and how shadows change throughout the day. Through the use of the skills of observing, communicating, and manipulating, students will investigate the properties of shadows. Integrated hands-on math activities are also included in this kit.

This collection is available as downloadable PDFs, but portions of the content are found in wiki format (see WIKI Learning Experiences and Resources) which can be edited or built up with other materials on the same topic by members of the Curriki community.

Reviewer Comments:

In this two to four week unit, early elementary students (targeted for kindergarten) will explore shadows, including how shadows form, how light effects objects, and how shadows change throughout the day. Students will also explore transparent, translucent, and opaque objects. Activities and lessons have clear objectives and are age-appropriate. This resource includes correlations with NY state standards, though objectives could easily fit in with other standards as well. Each “kit” in the Curriki repository includes a teacher’s manual and student activity book. The teacher’s manual includes a unit overview, extensive and clear background information materials, preparation instructions, discussion questions, cross-curricular extension ideas, a glossary and teacher references. The student manual includes clear, reproducible student handouts. The last section in the “kit” is a wiki, and Curriki members are encouraged to edit and build up the existing curriculum. These materials are excellent and can be used immediately in the classroom.
