Graphic Organizer/Worksheet

Kids who cannot read, have a very difficult time in science. I gave this short reading testing the first few days of schools working with 8th grade. Kids who could only answer 2 out of 5 I sent to the reading specialists for more testing. She gave a longer test which also showed that they were poor readers. By ninth grade they should be able to answer 3 out for 5. If they cannot read this simple material, how can they handle a science or social studies textbook. By 11th grade they should get 4 out of 5. If you want to make the test more difficult, make the questions constructed response. Have students take a paragraph from your textbook and translate it into this type of nonsense by replacing unknown or difficult words. The more the paragraph reads like nonsense the harder the reading will be for the student.
