Description:

This report provides an overview of the Chesapeake Bay bolide and how it influenced the formation of the modern bay. Introductory material discusses what a bolide is, types of impact craters, and recent impacts that have generated public interest. The discussion continues with evidence of the late Eocene Chesapeake Bay impact, including seismic data, characteristic minerals, and the discovery of a large bed of rubble defined by core drilling. There is also discussion of how the impact might have influenced the location of the bay itself. Compressed, downloadable versions of the report are provided.
