This comprehensive unit begins with a letter to students and parents explaining an extensive unit on Lois Lowry’s The Giver. Through reading The Giver, the students work will consist of looking at themes of social construction, socialization, coming of age, family and relationships, fairness, conformity and utopian visions. The unit continues with an explicit grading system, a general daily lesson plan for 30 days, many days of detailed lesson plans (which include the use of relevant news articles, as well as fables), various rubrics for oral and written presentations, graphic organizers, and a variety of other possible collateral readings of myths and fables. Throughout the unit, the students will read and engage in writing assignments, discussion assignments, and group work assignments. Class participation is a critical part of assessment.
