In this novel unit, students will analyze The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini by focusing study around the following five major themes of the novel: redemption, loyalty and friendship, isolation, loss of innocence and the relationship between parents and children. Students will investigate the novel in two major ways: a close reading of the novel through a mixture of group and independent study and thematic writing extension assignments. The unit products include ongoing reading responses, weekly exams, character diaries and a symbolism poem. Note for teachers: The lesson plans in this novel unit include objectives that the students should attain after working through the lesson. Some lesson objectives begin with "SWBAT" - this abbreviation stands for "Students will be able to". This resource is part of the The Kite Runner Unit collection.
