Reviewer Comments:

This excellent lesson on coding a non-fiction text about World War II is part of a larger parent unit. Best practice pre-reading strategies are fully integrated into this nine part lesson. The lesson provides the teacher with specific direction which can be used as a script if desired. Maps and other materials (i.e. glossary) are offered to build background information and access prior knowledge. A worksheet designed to activate students’ prior knowledge is provided as is a completed OH transparency version for follow-up group work. A clear syllabus, unit calendar, parent newsletter and culminating project directions are also included. The lesson shows students how to preview text, create pre-reading questions, and how to interact with text and use post-its during reading. Information is also provided to help students select their first novels for literature circles. The lesson has a nice mix of direct instruction, independent practice and ideas for differentiation.
