This one-page position statement advocates the use of Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMS professionals) in pre-K–6 schools, as well as high quality programs to prepare and certify them. It was created jointly by the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM), the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The statement proposes the responsibilities and qualifications of EMS professionals and provides the rationale for them. It cites numerous studies that discuss the impact of EMS professionals as well as documents that can be used to support the growth and leadership of EMS professionals.
