Description:

This is a lesson plan for several related activities about the Sun. Learners will observe how a candle flame is like the Sun, brainstorm why the Sun is needed and how energy from the Sun is used, construct a Sun-Earth scale model illustrating both size and distance, and build and use a small solar oven. The scale model activity requires a straight-line distance of 55 meters to show the Sun-Earth size and distance scale. The solar oven activity requires daytime access to a sunny outdoor location for a long enough period of time for participants to be able to cook with the solar oven.
