This multimedia lesson plan introduces exponents and exponential form through a video segment followed by handouts and assessments. Students learn to write repeated multiplication using exponents and to evaluate expressions in exponential form. The short Quick Time video, a Cyberchase story, shows the Lily Pad Escape, in which lily pads double each time they are immersed in water, growing a bridge from only 1 lily pad to 128 lily pads. Classwork expands the story example to a general discussion of base and exponents.
