This role-playing activity engages students in a practical exercise in land use planning, helping to reinforce the positive and negative aspects of land use laws and local zoning ordinances. Using photographs or color slides, and a legal description (deed) of a choice piece of relatively undeveloped real estate in their area (at least 20 acres in size), they will work in groups to select a proposed use for the parcel, research pertinent ordinances or planning reports, and develop a case as to why the land should be put to that use. Each group will then present their case for structured discussion by all class members. Questions and comments can be directed to specific groups or the class as a whole. Example photos and some suggetions for proposed uses are included.
