This virtual manipulative demonstrates the first five stages of a Sierpinski Carpet-like fractal. At each stage the middle one-ninth of each square purple area is transformed to gold, resulting in progressively smaller self-similar patterns of gold and purple. There is a function that reports the percentage of gold at any stage of iteration, even beyond what can be shown with the manipulative. Repeated use of the percentage reporting key can lead into a discussion of limit. Instructions for using the manipulative, discussion and explorations ideas, and a link to the NCTM standard for geometry grades 6-8 are included. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
