Description:

In this sub-unit, students are introduced to the concept of linear regression and determining the equation of a function in 2-variables from data, using a linear model. They will develop and conduct a "market survey", in order to use the data to perform their own regression. There is a strong emphasis on the use of technology in this sub-unit.

Reviewer Comments:

This lesson emphasizes the practical applications driving the use of linear equations. It is slightly startling to contrast the sophistication of the business questions with the naive investigation of the math tools required. ……………………………………………..………………………….…….…………….……………………………………….. This resource is part of a 8 week unit for an elementary Algebra class. The unit (Teaching Linear Equations through Running a Small Business ) covers linear equations, linear regression, and uses the simple economics of running a small business to illustrate the ideas. It requires the teacher to integrate the material with various skills, including use of the Internet and other technologies. It is an ambitious and ultimately rewarding undertaking.
