Description:

Aziz Faye is a master drummer from Senegal. He is from a long line of griots or story-tellers. This is the second of five short videos in which Faye tells about the historical function of griots in Senegalese society and demonstrates some of the rhythms that have been passed down through the generations to identify particular families or even a particular type of food. He explains how drums are made and tuned and shows the three types of sound that are made with the drum. Faye believes that drumming and dancing are important contributions from his family to the whole world. This resource is part of the Travels with Music: Senegal & Nigeria collection.
