Using this virtual manipulative, the learner makes a plan and uses commands to move a turtle on a blank screen. The commands are presented as buttons symbolizing a variety of possible movements. The learner must think logically to form a plan and select commands to move the turtle on the screen. The manipulative illustrates the relationship between numbers and movement. The learner uses the buttons to create a program for forward movements of a selected numbers of steps and of rotations from 15 to 90 degrees. In more challenging activities the turtle can be manipulated through a maze or around different objects. Included are instructions for using the manipulative and a link to the NCTM grades 6-8 standard for number and operations. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
