Description:

This activity challenges students to determine the probability of a basketball player scoring two points on a free throw if she is likely to make a basket three-fourths of the time. The activity, part of the Figure This! collection of 80 real world math challenges, introduces probability and explains its importance in the insurance industry, medical testing, and genetics. The Hint suggests that students model the problem by tossing a pair of coins. Related questions ask students to calculate the probability of losing the game or of winning it if the player has a 60 percent chance of scoring. Answers to all questions and additional resource suggestions are provided. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
