Reviewer Comments:

This is excellent collection of resources for teaching about Genocide. The collection includes a unit plan with enduring understandings, ideas for culminating projects, and day to day lesson plans. Although the unit is geared towards a specific classroom at the middle school, the content and lesson ideas are definitely appropriate for a high school classroom as well. The unit begins with the study of the Holocaust and then also examines the genocides in Rwanda and the Sudan. Some of the highlights include a group project on resistance to the Holocaust, watching clips of Schindler’s List and Hotel Rwanda with guided activities, and writing a letter to the editor about the situation in the Sudan. Throughout the unit there are a lot of readings with relevant and accessible content and a whole series of creative ideas for increasing student engagement and retention of the information.
