Description:

This applet is ideal for large groups of students. The applet uses a virtual detector which can be placed at some distance from a virtual star. A parameter tag controls the luminosity of the star. Many different stars can be measured. The flux through the detector and its distance are recorded and a plot of flux versus distance is automatically made. The detector can also be endowed with gaussian noise. In so doing, the student can be exposed to issues of a) detection, b) signal-to-noise, and c) limiting distances for stellar detection.
