Description:

This applet is an ideal one for large groups of students to do. The applet uses a virtual detector which can be placed at some distance from a virtual star. A parameter tag controls the luminosity of the star. Many stars can be setup to b e measured. The flux through the detector and its distance are recorded and a plot of flux versus distance is automatically made. However, the detector can be endowed with gaussian noise. In so doing, the student can be exposed to issues of a) detection, b) signal-to-noise, and c) limiting distances for stellar detection.
