Description:

Global warming, the current period of climate change, is melting the Arctic permafrost. This permanently frozen ground is thawing, and the ice is draining deeper into the ground, causing lakes to disappear. These satellite images from NASA display how lakes in the same area of Siberia, Russia, have diminished and even disappeared between 1973 and 2002.
