The Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) is an online science learning environment that lets students examine real-world evidence and analyze current scientific controversies. Its interactive modules cover topics in middle-school Earth science (rock cycle, global warming), physical science (thermodynamics, kinematics), and life science (cell processes, genetics, evolution, ecology) and in high-school physics (mechanical energy, dynamics, electricity), chemistry (phase change, energy thermodynamics, chemical bonding, chemical reactions), and biology (genetics, population genetics, body systems) that were chosen for their importance and difficulty. Most activities are performed online using software that guides students through pages that provide content, discussion tools, data visualization tools, causal modeling, simulations, and assessment materials. Teachers' materials include a library of projects, tools for creating or customizing projects, and management tools for viewing and assessing student work.
