In this activity students study a United States Geologic Survey (USGS) topographic map of the area where their school is located and compare it with a similar map of a different area. They will also study the USGS map symbols. During this activity students will identify a variety of topographic map symbols, locate their school and surrounding area on a topographic map, and make generalizations about an unidentified community by reading and interpreting map symbols.
