Description:

This lesson will teach the students strategies they can use to analyze websites intent and content. It teaches the students to decode the URL and to gain some information from domain name as well as the extensions. The lesson also strives for the students to become critical website readers and for them to apply the 5W strategy whenever they read a website. The students are given a website investigator handout with good strategies top use when reading websites. The handout also contains questions that the students have to answer to show that they understand and uses the critical thinking skills that are being taught. They are encouraged to use this handout as a reminder when they read informational text in websites.

This five part resource provides teachers with the skills to teach students how to analyze and evaluate a website’s intent and content. It is part of the larger standard of teaching students how to read informational text. Students are taught to become critical website readers - how to apply the 5W (Who, What, When, Where, Why?) strategy whenever they read a website. The lesson guides the teacher through explicit instruction, guided practice and independent practice, tips for differentiated instruction, and collaborative and independent work for students, clearly integrating best practice in education. The unit incudes: an excellent, thorough, complete, student friendly handout/handbook/workbook, detailing strategies to employ while reading websites, questions for the student to answer about websites, using critical thinking skills, a reminder to use this handout when reading informational text in websites and a bingo game to be used to reinforce this lesson. It also provides a retelling rubric guiding the student in how to evaluate informational text, a student survey about internet use and a link for students to follow a webquest to All About Explorers.
