Lesson Plan, Other

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to reflect upon and personally relate to a teacher read-aloud of a narrative story. The lesson could be used with other stories; however, A Bad Case of Stripes allows for a personal connection by having students reflect on similar situations or emotions in their own lives. Acceptable behaviors and ways to prevent bullying in the classroom and school are also discussed.

This excellent resource from the IRA/NCTE website uses literature as a way to address bullying. Objectives are clear, the lessons are rich and the assessment is authentic. The resource provides detailed instructions and activities for three sessions, which include: whole group teacher read-aloud and think-aloud; rich class discussion; partner work; individual literature response journaling; small group literature response discussion; and follow- up computer games with PBS Kids’ websites. Best practices in reading are employed in every session and a variety of extension activities are provided.

I really like this lesson... I teach 4th graders and this is when I see students trying to bully others around. I think it is really challenging and great for my students to relate to characters and their characteristics in a story. It would be great at the beginning of the year to talk about bullying, and an attempt to get to know your students.

The lesson plan is good. Needs to improvise with a little plan for below average students as all students in the class are not same. A few activities would help them come up to the level of average atleast. I felt so. Thanks
