Reviewer Comments:

This three part resource begins with the Schmoop guide, which provides: a “nutshell” of background information and storyline to the novel, analysis for themes, quotes, summary, and study questions. The second part is a PPT presentation on symbolism – in general as well as specific to The Giver. The third, is a 20 page unit on “Society and Ourselves” created for an ELA class of 8th graders. The Giver is the primary vehicle for the unit which is a 30 day plan of study. Rubrics are provided for: an oral presentation (argument paper) and persuasive essay (societal visions). Current event issues as they relate to the themes in The Giver are brought in to the unit as well. A graphic organizer for character analysis and citing evidence in the text is also included. Lastly, additional readings of fables and morals are provided.
